Marta Martins

Investigador Principal

Marta Martins is a researcher at the Centre for Psychological Research and Social Intervention (CIS-Iscte/CVTT-Iscte) since 2019 and an Invited Assistant Professor at Iscte since 2020. Her research focuses on the Psychology and Neurobiology of reading/writing acquisition and on music and sound as a tool to improve learning and behavior. She investigates how music and auditory–motor experiences shape both cognition and emotion using multi-method, interdisciplinary approaches that combines experimental psychology and cognitive neuroscience with a strong emphasis on translating findings to education and health contexts. She has collaborated with over 10 national and international researchers, including leading experts in developmental cognitive neuroscience (N Gaab) and neuroimaging (C Gaser). Marta holds a PhD in Psychology (U Porto, 2019), a degree in Biology (2007), an MSc in Educational Administration and Management (2012), and the 8th degree in treble recorder. For eight years, she taught music in primary schools, an experience that continues to shape her design of ecologically valid programs that are both scientifically rigorous and feasible in real-world classrooms. She has published in high-ranked journals, such as Brain Structure & Function and NeuroImage and is regularly invited to present at scientific and public events (e.g., JURE 2022), engage with the media (e.g., RTP2's Sociedade Civil), and contribute to science outreach (Superinteressante magazine). Her work has been awarded 8 times, including with the 2023 Young Research Award from the Portuguese Association for Experimental Psychology. Since her PhD in 2019, she has held two junior research positions and, in the past two years alone, secured three competitive research/project grants — two as Principal Investigator (FCT and Bial Foundation) — and a 6-year FCT individual research position in 2023.
